The staff of Lakewood Baptist Church are thrilled to serve the people of God gathered here. They see their purpose coming from the pages of Scripture: “to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love” (Ephesians 4:12-16).

Our Story

In 1986, Hurstbourne Baptist Church saw the need for a new church to be started in the rapidly growing East End of Louisville in order to reach people for Christ.  As a result, on March 17th, 1987 a small group of 5 people met for a prayer meeting in the home of Al and Brenda Harris in Beckley Woods subdivision.  In May of 1987, Dr. David Harris was called as full-time pastor for the new mission church.

In July 23, 1987 Lakewood’s present property site was purchased.  The property originally consisted of 23 acres of rolling meadows with trees surrounding a small lake.  The first Sunday service conducted on the new property site was September 20, 1987 in the pre-existing 10 room farmhouse.  One year later, Lakewood Baptist Church was constituted into a church on September 25, 1988 with 59 charter members. Lakewood broke ground on its beautiful worship center in late fall of 1988.  The construction of the worship facility was a labor of love.  Church members and Baptist Builders from other locations joined in a team effort to construct God’s house.
