Our History
In 1986, Hurstbourne Baptist Church saw the need for a new church to be started in the rapidly growing East End of Louisville in order to reach people for Christ. As a result, on March 17th, 1987 a small group of 5 people met for a prayer meeting in the home of Al and Brenda Harris in Beckley Woods subdivision. In May of 1987, Dr. David Harris was called as full-time pastor for the new mission church.
In July 23, 1987 Lakewood's present property site was purchased. The property originally consisted of 23 acres of rolling meadows with trees surrounding a small lake.
The first Sunday service conducted on the new property site was September 20, 1987 in the pre-existing 10 room farmhouse. One year later, Lakewood Baptist Church was constituted into a church on September 25, 1988 with 59 charter members. Lakewood broke ground on its beautiful worship center in late fall of 1988. The construction of the worship facility was a labor of love. Church members and Baptist Builders from other locations joined in a team effort to construct God's house.
Each year has brought new blessings for Lakewood. The church's ministries have continued to blossom these last 2-3 years. To God be the glory, great things He hath done!
